Meditation techniques
1. Silence (Mouna)
He advocated and practiced the use of total
quietness as a means of introspection. Being silent enables our minds to relax
and concentrate on the subtler parts of our awareness.
2. Meditation on Divine Love
According to him, love is the key to
enlightenment. Reflecting on the heavenly love that resides in our hearts can
cleanse our spirits and bring us nearer to God.
3. Contemplation on the Self (Atma Vichara)
Meher Baba said that we should look within to understand ourselves. When we
practice this kind of meditation, we are able to rise above our ego and see
ourselves as a manifestation of God.
4. Loving all living beings is essential.
It is necessary to meditate on compassion and love for all people. According to
Meher Baba, loving all living beings without exception is the path to
enlightenment and union with God.
5. Absorption in God’s Presence
A person can feel closer to God through meditation in which they imagine God's
presence in their life. According to Meher Baba, we can develop a divine
consciousness by meditating on God at a personal level.
6. Meditation on the Breath
Meher Baba advocated focusing on the breath as a means of mental stillness.
Concentrating on breathing in and out gives calmness and clarity of thought to
us.
7. Mantra Repetition (Japa)
Meher Baba stressed the need for using
sacred words, or mantras, to calm the soul and establish a connection to God.
One way to focus and eliminate distractions during meditation is to repeat a
mantra.
8. Focusing on the Heart Center.
Since the heart is the dwelling place of heavenly love, it is an appropriate
place to direct our meditative attention. A deeper understanding of God's love
for us can be achieved through this practice.
9. Selfless Service (Seva) as Meditation
According to Meher Baba, doing good deeds for the benefit of others is like
meditation. Purifying our heart and mind through selfless service to others
makes us more open to receiving heavenly favor.
10. Detachment from Worldly Desires
If we want to grow spiritually, we must
practice detachment. Meher Baba taught that we could achieve inner liberation
by focusing on the transience of material possessions.
11. Surrender to the Divine Will
According to Meher Baba's teachings, the
idea of submitting our will to the Divine is a central message. Letting go of
our ego and aligning with God's purpose brings humility and inner serenity
among us.
12. Awareness of the Present Moment
We should meditate on the present moment if we wish to release our hold on the
past or the future. The mind is sharpened, and the perception of the divine
presence in everyday life is enhanced by being totally present.
13. The Practice of Humility
According to Meher Baba, humility is very important for meditation. A
practitioner might become more susceptible to spiritual growth by meditating on
humility, and it finally helps to eliminate the ego.
14. Maintaining focus on the Divine Essence
We should contemplate an image of the cherished Master or another manifestation
of God that invokes devotion among us. Practicing this type of meditation
regularly can help us develop feelings of profound adoration and respect for
the divine.
15. Discipline of Thought
According to Meher Baba, one of the most important steps toward enlightenment
is learning to regulate our thoughts. Negativity can be removed, and the mind
can be directed toward greater and divine purposes through meditation.
16. Divine Remembrance (Zikr)
Mehere Baba strongly advocated for the remembrance of the Divine, recalling the
Divine's name or traits can strengthen the bond with the spiritual world.
17. Meditation on the Nature of Illusion
(Maya)
Meher Baba emphasized the transitory character of earthly things to his
followers. We should be able to let go of attachment and perceive the spiritual
realm knowing that this world is transitory.
18. Inner Stillness and Peace
According to Meher Baba, sitting quietly within is the essence of genuine
meditation. By calming the turbulent thoughts, the practitioner can attain a
more profound state of tranquility, allowing for a clearer perception of the
divine.
19. Harmonizing mind, body, and spirit.
Meher Baba says when we meditate, it is important to bring our spirit, body,
and mind into harmony. Holistic harmony is achieved through the practice of
physical postures, breath control, and mental focus simultaneously, and it
fosters deeper spiritual experiences.
20. Witnessing the Inner Drama
Meher Baba advocated that we must simply observe or experiences rather than
clinging to or judging our internal experiences, as they emerge during meditation. One way to
develop self-awareness and dispassion is to be a witness to our inner life.
