The meditation methods of Anandamayi Maa

Teacher’s Introduction

Anandamayi Maa was a saint and famous spiritual teacher who lived her whole life in heavenly happiness. She was born in 1896 in India. Her life, full of austerity, devotion, and total submission to God, made her a renowned and wise spiritual leader. There are three pillars of Anandamayi Maa's teachings, and they are inner realization, selfless love, and direct experience of the Divine. She motivated her followers to practice devotion, meditation, and self-awareness. She had motivated millions of people on their spiritual paths.

Meditation techniques
1.
Surrender to the Divine:
According to Anandamayi Maa, complete surrender to the Divine was very important. This includes giving up our ego and all our cravings, and through the act of submission, we can receive divine grace and inner tranquility.

2. Meditation on the center of one's heart
This method helps us to connect with the divine's caring love and promotes tranquility, serenity, and openness to spiritual powers among us.

3. Pranayama (Breath Control):
In this method of practice of pranayama, or controlled breathing, we can help to quiet our mind and bring our physical and spiritual planes into harmony. According to Anandmayi Maa, one way to attain enlightenment is through becoming aware of our breath.

4.
Mantra Japa (Chanting the Divine Name)
We must recite holy names or mantras such as "Om Namaha Shivaya" or "Hare Krishna," and this would help us to get stabilized mentally and draw us nearer to God. This practice is known as mantra Japa, or chanting the divine name. It opens a path for us beyond the physical realm.

5. Meditation on the Divine Form
In this practice of meditation, we focus our heart and mind on a divine deity or a particular god, and it can help us to direct our devotion and establish a deeper spiritual bond with the chosen deity.

6.
Observing the Mind (Antar Dhyana)
We can achieve inner calmness and awareness of the temporariness of thoughts through the practice of silently watching them without attachment or judgment.

7.
Self-Inquiry (Atma Vichar)
We must ask ourselves, "Who am I?" This is a recommended self-inquiry mechanism from Anandamayi Maa. Introspection from us would help in enlightenment and union with the Divine.

8.
Kundalini Awakening Meditation
The dormant spiritual force within is awakened through meditation on the Kundalini, or root energy, and it can help bring about a deep sense of oneness with the Divine.

9.
Meditation on quietness

When we keep ourselves quiet over long periods of time, we become more self-aware. We can feel the presence of God in getting quiet, and it would calm our thoughts and words.

10.
Witnessing the Breath

We can connect with the Divine through the act of breathing and become more aware of the vital life force by observing our breath. Anandamayi Maa suggested this ancient tantric philosophy of witnessing breath, and this is a way to balance our body, mind, and spirit. It helps us in developing a connection between the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether), the breath, and the energy channels (nadis).

11. Cosmic Energy Meditation (Prana Dhyan)

In this meditation technique, we can improve our vitality and open ourselves to sacred understanding and wisdom by focusing our awareness on the movement of life force within and around the body.

12.
Love and Compassion Meditation (Prema Dhyana)
One way to purify our heart and mind and open ourselves to divine grace is to meditate on unconditional love and compassion for all beings. This practice clears your mind of unpleasant emotions, opens your heart, and makes you feel deeply connected and empathetic.

13. Unity Meditation (Advaita Dhyana)

Unity meditation is a method that helps us become more receptive to the interdependence of everything around us. It also encourages us to consider the truth that there is no such thing as dualism.

14.
Meditation on the Divine Mother (Maa Dhyana)

This practice would bring a feeling of protection, nurture, and unconditional love, and it involves the focus on an image or presence of the Divine Mother.

15.
Mindfulness of the Present Moment
According to Anandamayi Maa, true meditation takes place in the present moment when we practice mindfulness in the current moment. By practicing perfect mindfulness in the present moment, we would find serenity and oneness with the Divine.

16.
Meditation on the Sound of Silence
One of the main philosophies of the silence sound, or Anahata Nada, is to pay attention to our own internal sound, or Nada, during meditation. We should try to listen to the gentle sound of silence, and this is a profound way to meditate on the divine rhythm inside us.

17. Devotional Singing (Kirtan or Bhajan)
Anandamayi Maa recommended devotional singing as a means of meditation, and it would help us to connect with the Divine on a deeper level.

18. Meditation on Divine Presence
Anandmayi Maa has recommended another method to meditate on the divine presence: we have to imagine the divine's presence all around us. This would help us get connected to God and gain more insight into our spiritual life.

19.
Contemplation of Death
We must separate ourselves from earthly concerns and focus our attention on spiritual enlightenment through contemplation on death.

20. Total Immersion in the Divine (Samadhi)
According to Anandamayi Maa, complete immersion in the divine is the peak of meditation. In this condition, we would lose all feelings of ego within and experience pure joy. We can achieve this state through extensive spiritual discipline.

Conclusion:
The meditation techniques taught by Anandamayi Maa provide effective routes to enlightenment through the cultivation of devotion, submission, and self-awareness. In her teachings, she expected us to rise above our egos and find divinity in everything. Her methods would help us to attain serenity, clarity, and a clear path to inner wisdom. Spiritual seekers find Anandamayi Maa's teachings helpful, and they would help us into enlightenment and contentment inside.
