The meditation methods of Osho
Teacher’s Introduction
Osho was also known as Bhagwan Shree
Rajneesh. He was a spiritual teacher and philosopher, renowned for his
innovative approach to life, spirituality, and meditation. He was the person
who combined Eastern wisdom with Western psychology and challenged many norms
of society and organized religions. His teachings explained mindfulness, joy,
and spiritual liberation. No doubt, he faced many controversies, but his ideas
have influenced many seekers worldwide.
Meditation techniques:
In order to help people in going beyond mental conditioning, Osho created a
number of meditation methods, and they include movement, breathing, sound
meditations, and awareness methods. I am sharing some of his famous methods:
1. Dynamic meditation
This method involves jumping with the chant "Hoo" and engaging in
deep, infrequent breathing, emotional release, silence, and joyful celebration,
culminating in a five-stage meditation process. This technique would give inner
peace and help us to release emotions.
2. The Kundalini Journey
There are four phases of this activity, and it includes shaking, dancing,
remaining still, and finally relaxing. This whole process helps to overcome
mental stress, activate hidden energy, and improve awareness.
3. Meditation on Nadabrahma
This method can be divided into three parts: meditation technique, humming
sound from the mouth, gentle hand motions, and finally getting inactive. This
helps in balancing the inner vibrations, which in turn synchronizes the body
and mind.
4. Meditation on Nataraja
This meditation technique uses dance to help the mind dissolve into the body's
flow. This gives the mind a state of complete calmness.
5. Vipassana Meditation
In this practice, nonattachment to thoughts is performed through focus on the
breath. It helps one to become more aware and focused.
6. Meditation in Gibberish
In this method, we have to make illogical noises, and after this, we have to
remain silent for some time in order to release suppressed emotions. It helps
us to overcome mental noise within and opens us to intense stillness.
7. Meditation on Chakra Breathing
This gives an approach to our mental and physical health, and it involves
breathing exercises to activate and balance the chakras or energy centers
inside our bodies.
8. Meditation with Chakra Sounds
This is a vocal sound therapy, and in this method, we try to achieve
enlightenment and inner calmness via the stimulation and balancing of the
chakras (or energy centers).
9. Gourishankar meditation
This method divides itself into four phases: deep breathing, staring at a
candle, free-flow movement of the body, and silence. It makes us go into
different mental states.
10. Devavani Meditation
This method involves four stages: sitting in silence, speaking an unknown
language, gently moving the body, and finally relaxing the body and mind. The
total time required to do this technique is one hour (15 minutes each step).
This helps us to attain deep relaxation and inner peace.
11. Mandala meditation
This method requires running in place, making circular hand motions, focusing
on the breath, and then remaining motionless. It helps the meditator to feel
energized.
12. Whirl meditation
This method draws inspiration from the practices of Sufism. This method
involves continuous body spinning, which induces ecstasy and leads to deep
relaxation.
13. Meditation by gazing
This practice involves maintaining a strong focus and mental clarity by staring
at an object, such as a candle flame, for a few minutes.
14. No Mind Meditation
This is a one-hour meditation process in
which the first 45 minutes we have to speak gibberish, meaningless things, and
then get into silence for the next 15 minutes. This helps us to break
overthinking and finally attain inner peace within.
15. Stop meditation
In this method, we are allowed to roam here and there until the signal
"STOP!” is given. This first aids us in reaching a deeper level of
consciousness, after which we immediately freeze and observe our current inner
state.
16. Death meditation
In this process, we must overcome fear and embrace life to its fullest by using
guided visualization, which involves imagining one's own death and rebirth.
17. Let Go meditation
This is the art of effortless relaxation in which we give up all control over
our thoughts and body.
18. Heart meditation
In this process, we have to bring about emotions of thankfulness and compassion
by focusing on the heart and intentionally radiating love.
19. Witnessing meditation
In this process, we have to observe our internal experiences (mental,
emotional, and physical) without attaching any meaning to them. This gives deep
relaxation and self-awareness.
20. Silent sitting meditation
In this technique, we have to find inner calmness by sitting quietly and
letting our thoughts rest naturally, without effort.
Conclusion
Osho's meditation practices help us to go beyond mental conditioning and
achieve a state of refined awareness, joy, and spontaneity. His methods
commonly use movement, sound, and inner cleansing to relieve suppressed stress.
Whether we are seeking emotional healing, mindfulness, or spiritual awakening,
the secret to these meditations is to practice them fully, giving oneself over
to the process and allowing change to happen naturally.
