The meditation methods of Paramhansa Yogananda

Teacher’s Introduction

Spiritual guru Paramhansa Yogananda had introduced millions of people to India’s ancient wisdom, and his book “Autobiography of a Yogi” is a renowned book all over the world. He was born in the late 19th century and established the Self-Realization Fellowship to spread his teachings. He played a significant role in introducing Kriya Yoga to the West. His life’s goal was to help people on the path of self-realization and inner communion with God and spread the message of the oneness of all religions. All throughout the world, seekers are still motivated by His teachings.

Meditation techniques

1.     Hong-Sau Technique

This is a powerful breath-awareness technique in which one repeats "Hong" in their mind as they inhale and "Sau" as they exhale. This method helps in deep meditation, concentration, and mental calmness.

2.     Kriya Yoga

Kriya Yoga is a sophisticated pranayama method, and it uses controlled breathing to channelize prana, or life energy, through our spine. It helps in spiritual development and strengthens our relationship with God.

3.     The Aum Technique

In this technique, we allow ourselves to listen to the cosmic sound "AUM," which is a vibration of creation. This method helps to bring the meditator closer to divine awareness.

     4.
Energization Exercises

A Yogananda developed a series of exercises known as "Energization Exercises" to aid the body in absorbing cosmic energy. We can prepare for meditation and boost our vitality by tensing and relaxing various body regions.

5.
Om-chanting meditation

This technique is different from the third technique in a way that the former is about chanting Om loudly and the latter is listening to Aum in the vibration of creation. This technique helps us attain mental peace and broadens our consciousness.

6.
Watching the Breath

We must develop inner peace among us by just paying attention to our natural breath without trying to manipulate it. This meditation helps in achieving a deep state of awareness and distancing ourselves from thoughts.

7. Spinal Rejuvenation Meditation

We should concentrate from the top to the bottom of our spine, as this method opens up higher states of consciousness and refreshes our neurological system.

8. Devotional Meditation

We must centre our hearts on intense prayer and communication with the Divine through expressing our love and surrender. This approach strengthens our relationship with God.

9. Expanding Light Meditation

We should visualize a heavenly light at the centre of our existence and extend it to all other beings. This exercise helps us in attaining inner happiness, tranquility, and love for all people.

10. Chakra Awareness Meditation

We should focus on every chakra (energy centre), also known as chakra awareness meditation, and this would encourage our mental and physical equilibrium and help in activating dormant spiritual energy.

11. Mantra Meditation

In this meditation technique, we practice raising our consciousness by repeating names of the gods. This technique clears our mind from negativity and improves our focus on meditation.

12. Gratitude meditation

This is the practice of reflecting on our life's gifts and giving thanks to God or the universe for them. This technique awakens our hearts to abundance and boosts joyful feelings.

13.
Inner Smile Meditation

This is the practice of smiling inwardly from the heart and experiencing joy and warmth within. This method creates a calm condition, relaxes our body, and lifts our soul.

14.
Silent Affirmations

When we repeat strong affirmations like "I am peaceful; I am divine," then it is known as silent affirmation. This exercise rewires the subconscious mind for introspection.

15. Gazing at the Spiritual Eye

Yogananda emphasizes that we focus consciousness on the third eye, which is the area between the eyebrows. This facilitates the development of deep intuitive states and a closer relationship with God. I suggest doing this practice under caution and with the help of the right mentor.

16. Loving-Kindness Meditation

In this meditation practice, we should send love, peace, and goodness to ourselves and all living things. This exercise eliminates feelings of separation and encourages compassion.

17. Breath-Pause Awareness

In this technique, we experience inner calm by paying attention to the natural pause that occurs between inhaling and exhaling. This method promotes mental serenity and increases our present-moment awareness.

18. Divine Friendship Meditation

In this method, we meditate on the presence of a spiritual master or enlightened being. would give inner guidance and enhance our universal consciousness.

19. Stillness in Nature Meditation

We must meditate in a tranquil natural environment while absorbing the peaceful energy of mountains, trees, or water. This technique would enhance our inner tranquility and help in developing a closer relationship with the universe.

20. Listening to Silence

We must become deeply aware of the inner silence that is beyond our thoughts and external noise. This practice would help in spiritual awareness and deep inner peace.

Conclusion

The meditation methods of Paramhansa Yogananda offer a systematic path to enlightenment and assist many of us in discovering a profound sense of inner calm, heavenly love, and unity with the cosmos. We might awaken to our real spiritual essence and transcend worldly distractions by regularly following these strategies.
