Teacher’s Introduction
In the nineteenth century, we had one of India’s most respected spiritual
leaders and mystics. His deep spiritual teachings, mystical experiences, and
unwavering dedication made him famous among us. He stressed the direct personal
experience of God, and he himself was an ardent devotee of Divine Mother Kali.
He motivated us toward spiritual practice, self-realization, and unconditional
love. Sri Ramakrishna's disciple Swami Vivekananda reached people all across
the world and helped them on the path of enlightenment through spreading
teachings imparted by Sri Ramakrishna.
Meditation techniques
- Constant Chanting of God's Name
According to Ramakrishna, the reciting of the name of God again and again would bring us closer to God and help us concentrate. The goal of this repetitive chanting is to find serenity and enlightenment. - Meditation on the Form of the Divine
In this technique, Ramakrishna emphasized
that we should meditate on holy forms of chosen deities like Krishna, Kali, or
Rama, and it will bring inner peace. This will invoke concentration and
devotion among us.
3. Formless Meditation
Ramakrishna stressed that after
concentrating on a form, we must continue meditating on the formless God. This
would help us to see beyond the world of illusion and into the realm of pure
reality.
4. Worship of the Blessed Mother
Sri Ramakrishna himself was so devoted to Kali, and this reminds us that giving
ourselves to the Divine Mother would lead us to a more pure heart and help us
to develop an altruistic outlook on life.
- Self-Inquiry (Atma-Vichara)
Like many other saints, Sri Ramakrishna
motivated us to ponder the question, "Who am I?" which would lead us
to the realization of one's essence beyond the material world. When we engage
in introspection, we discover ourselves as a part of the infinite awareness.
6. 6. Surrender to God
We must put our trust in God’s will, and this will eliminate our ego and create
tranquility among us. We should try to make room for the grace of God and let
it flow in our lives.
- Silent Meditation (Dhyana)
Sri Ramakrishna emphasized the importance
of silence, and when we practice physical and mental silence, it would
facilitate spiritual insight and perception of divine presence among us.
8. 8. Meditating on Divine Light
The divine light means the intuition
within. We must follow our own intuition and concentrate on how to grow
spiritually through following that divine light. This will make us grow
spiritually better.
9. 9. Contemplation on Divine Love
We must fix our attention on the divine love of Guru or God; this will dissolve
our ego. We must feel God's presence in our lives, and this would help in
becoming one with the cosmos. We must always remember love is the most
important thing.
- Japa (Mantra Repetition)
This is different from chanting the name of God, in which we just chant the name of God. But in this method, we must chant the mantra like "Om Namah Shivaya," a sacred phrase, and this would help us to unite and focus on the Divine. This would help us to get more open to God’s grace and cleanse our mind.
- Breath Control (Pranayama)
Another way to quiet the mind is through
focus on breath. This will help us to gain mastery over our minds and achieve
deeper levels of relaxation.
12. Meditating on the Heart
Center
We must focus our attention on our heart,
i.e., what we like most in our life. This will shift our focus to what we are
passionate about in our lives.
13. Bhakti (Devotion) Meditation
In this method, we offer sincere praise and thanks to a higher power. Bhakti is
loving devotion towards that higher power, and according to Ramakrishna, Bhakti
is the pinnacle of spiritual practice and meditation.
- Seva (Selfless Service)
We must do acts of unselfish service to others without seeking anything in return. This will help us to achieve inner peace and develop compassion.
- Contemplation on Death
When we think about dying, then we become more spiritually aware about ourselves. Once we realize that life is fleeting, we won’t take worldly ambitions seriously.
16. Absorption in the Divine
We must immerse ourselves in the contemplation of the divine through
understanding of God. When we contemplate spiritual ideas inside the scripture,
our understanding of divinity grows, and gradually we develop union with the
Divine.
- Repetition of Divine Qualities
We must contemplate divine attributes like wisdom, kindness, purity, peace, devotion, etc., and these virtues will help us grow better spiritually.
- Meditation on Sacred Texts
We can gain spiritual insight and knowledge by reflecting on the
teachings of the saints. According to
Ramakrishna, reading these scriptures will be a framework for final meditation.
19. 19. Focusing on the Present Moment
We should be unattached to the past or the
future. Sri Ramakrishna always emphasized the importance of living in the here
and now. Mindfulness towards our daily activities can calm our minds and
senses.
20.20. Dispassion (Vairagya)
We must live with a higher purpose in our lives, and this will facilitate
detachment from lower pleasures and distractions. This is the path of
enlightenment and developing deep satisfaction within.
Conclusion:
Sri Ramakrishna provides a comprehensive
route to attain meditation through different techniques, and his teachings are
novel and totally independent of all other religions. People are able to feel
God’s presence in their life through his teachings because of the simplicity,
dedication, and submission in the personality of Sri Ramakrishna. Ramakrishna
is still being followed all around the globe by those who are seeking the
truth.
