The meditation methods of Srila Prabhupada
Teacher’s Introduction
The great spiritual teacher Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada founded
the organization International Society
for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). He was born in the year 1896 in Kolkata in
India. He had encouraged endless people to practice Bhakti Yoga by spreading
the knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam across the globe. In
his entire life, he devoted himself to teaching others about Lord Krishna. He
provided so many presentations of Bhakti yoga to Westerners to attract them
toward Krishna consciousness. There are many spiritual seekers who found guidance
and inspiration in Srila Prabhupada’s teachings.
Meditation techniques
1. Chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra
Srila Prabhupada emphasized us to continue to chant the
Hare Krishna Maha mantra. Regular chanting not only cleanses our intellect but
also unites us with Krishna.
2. Sankirtan (Congregational Chanting)
Another important method of meditation suggested by Srila Prabhupada is
Sankirtan, which is also known as congregational chanting. It involves singing
the sacred names of Krishna in harmony with other devotees. Communal singing
would help us to strengthen our bond with God.
3. Reflection on the
Bhagavad Gita.
When we meditate upon the scripture Bhagavad Gita and apply its teachings to
our life difficulties, we gradually submit ourselves to our mentor or Guru
Krishna.
4. Srimad Bhagavatam
Meditation
We must read and reflect on the Srimad Bhagavatam and strengthen our devotion
by immersing our thoughts in the Lord's pastimes.
5. Focusing on Krishna’s
Divine Form
We would achieve inner calmness and enhanced spiritual
awareness by fixing our attention on the lovely form of Krishna.
6. Meditation on the
Guru's Teachings
According to Srila Prabhupada, we would overcome uncertainty and deepen our
trust if we reflect on the teachings of our spiritual master.
7. Remembering Krishna’s
Pastimes
According to Srila Prabhupada, we must meditate on Krishna's childhood,
pastimes in Vrindavan, and how Krishna interacted with His followers.
8. Realizing our true
nature
Srila Prabhupada has emphasized that we need to contemplate on our true nature
and we are eternal soul to serve Krishna rather than being a material body.
9. Meditation on Krishna
Prasadam
We must offer our fresh, vegetarian food to Krishna and
then consume it as prasadam, also known as sacred food. Srila Prabhupada
stressed that this is a wonderful way to meditate, and it would purify our
mind. When we think of prasadam as Krishna's kindness, it would help us to
appreciate Krishna more in our lives.
10. Meditation Through Guru
Seva (Serving the Spiritual Master)
We must develop the practice of serving our spiritual master and keep our mind
focused on the Guru’s teachings. This is a powerful kind of meditation, and it
is also known as guru seva.
11. Meditation on Tulasi
Devi
We must meditate on Tulasi Maharani, the goddess of devotion, and this is
another beneficial way to meditate. We must sit in a clean and quiet place,
preferably near a Tulasi plant, and light an incense stick and a diya to
enhance the sattvic atmosphere. While we should concentrate on reciting the
Tulasi Pranam mantra and chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra.
12. Reflecting on the
Sacred Sites (Holy Dhamas)
We must contemplate upon Vrindavan, Mathura, and other sacred locations, as
this will aid in the development of our devotion to Krishna.
13. Humility and service as
meditation.
According to Srila Prabhupada, we must try to develop a sense of humility and
give service to Krishna and His devotees without expecting anything in return.
14. Solitary Meditation
(Japa in Solitude)
Another way of meditation, as emphasized by Srila Prabhupada, is to spend time
alone in chanting and contemplating Krishna's greatness. This is a wonderful
way to attain profound focus and tranquility.
15. Meditation Through
Devotional Music
If we sing devotional songs or bhajans and play traditional Indian instruments
like mridanga, kartals, etc. during kirtan, then it would turn out to be a
wonderful way to meditate and clear our minds.
16. Scriptural Study and
Reflection
When we study and reflect on different spiritual scriptures, it would help us
to gain insight and understanding in our devotional life.
17. Meditating on Krishna’s
Mercy and Love
We should try to focus on Krishna's infinite mercy, and
this would help us to deepen our faith and devotion to Lord Krishna.
18. Karma Yoga as
Meditation
This meditation technique expects us to present all our deeds and
responsibilities to Krishna. We must try to turn our mundane tasks into
opportunities for spiritual growth and meditation on Krishna.
19. Temple Meditation
We must visit and meditate in a temple. Inside the temple,
we should participate in devotional service and attend worshipping Krishna
ceremonies and it will bring us into a state of heightened awakening.
20. Reflecting on Krishna's
Devotional Characteristics
We can deepen our love and devotion to Krishna through contemplating His divine
attributes such as His benevolence, wisdom, love, austerity, opulence, and
beauty.
