Teacher’s Introduction

The great spiritual teacher Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada founded the organization  International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). He was born in the year 1896 in Kolkata in India. He had encouraged endless people to practice Bhakti Yoga by spreading the knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam across the globe. In his entire life, he devoted himself to teaching others about Lord Krishna. He provided so many presentations of Bhakti yoga to Westerners to attract them toward Krishna consciousness. There are many spiritual seekers who found guidance and inspiration in Srila Prabhupada’s teachings.


Meditation techniques


1. Chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra

Srila Prabhupada emphasized us to continue to chant the Hare Krishna Maha mantra. Regular chanting not only cleanses our intellect but also unites us with Krishna.

Sankirtan (Congregational Chanting)


Another important method of meditation suggested by Srila Prabhupada is Sankirtan, which is also known as congregational chanting. It involves singing the sacred names of Krishna in harmony with other devotees. Communal singing would help us to strengthen our bond with God.

3. Reflection on the Bhagavad Gita.

When we meditate upon the scripture Bhagavad Gita and apply its teachings to our life difficulties, we gradually submit ourselves to our mentor or Guru Krishna.

4. Srimad Bhagavatam Meditation


We must read and reflect on the Srimad Bhagavatam and strengthen our devotion by immersing our thoughts in the Lord's pastimes.

5. Focusing on Krishna’s Divine Form

We would achieve inner calmness and enhanced spiritual awareness by fixing our attention on the lovely form of Krishna.

 

 

6. Meditation on the Guru's Teachings


According to Srila Prabhupada, we would overcome uncertainty and deepen our trust if we reflect on the teachings of our spiritual master.

7. Remembering Krishna’s Pastimes

According to Srila Prabhupada, we must meditate on Krishna's childhood, pastimes in Vrindavan, and how Krishna interacted with His followers.

8. Realizing our true nature

Srila Prabhupada has emphasized that we need to contemplate on our true nature and we are eternal soul to serve Krishna rather than being a material body.

9. Meditation on Krishna Prasadam

We must offer our fresh, vegetarian food to Krishna and then consume it as prasadam, also known as sacred food. Srila Prabhupada stressed that this is a wonderful way to meditate, and it would purify our mind. When we think of prasadam as Krishna's kindness, it would help us to appreciate Krishna more in our lives.

10. Meditation Through Guru Seva (Serving the Spiritual Master)

We must develop the practice of serving our spiritual master and keep our mind focused on the Guru’s teachings. This is a powerful kind of meditation, and it is also known as guru seva.

11. Meditation on Tulasi Devi


We must meditate on Tulasi Maharani, the goddess of devotion, and this is another beneficial way to meditate. We must sit in a clean and quiet place, preferably near a Tulasi plant, and light an incense stick and a diya to enhance the sattvic atmosphere. While we should concentrate on reciting the Tulasi Pranam mantra and chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra.

12. Reflecting on the Sacred Sites (Holy Dhamas)


We must contemplate upon Vrindavan, Mathura, and other sacred locations, as this will aid in the development of our devotion to Krishna.

13. Humility and service as meditation.

According to Srila Prabhupada, we must try to develop a sense of humility and give service to Krishna and His devotees without expecting anything in return.

 

 

14. Solitary Meditation (Japa in Solitude)


Another way of meditation, as emphasized by Srila Prabhupada, is to spend time alone in chanting and contemplating Krishna's greatness. This is a wonderful way to attain profound focus and tranquility.

15. Meditation Through Devotional Music


If we sing devotional songs or bhajans and play traditional Indian instruments like mridanga, kartals, etc. during kirtan, then it would turn out to be a wonderful way to meditate and clear our minds.

16. Scriptural Study and Reflection

When we study and reflect on different spiritual scriptures, it would help us to gain insight and understanding in our devotional life.

17. Meditating on Krishna’s Mercy and Love

We should try to focus on Krishna's infinite mercy, and this would help us to deepen our faith and devotion to Lord Krishna.

18. Karma Yoga as Meditation

This meditation technique expects us to present all our deeds and responsibilities to Krishna. We must try to turn our mundane tasks into opportunities for spiritual growth and meditation on Krishna.

19. Temple Meditation

We must visit and meditate in a temple. Inside the temple, we should participate in devotional service and attend worshipping Krishna ceremonies and it will bring us into a state of heightened awakening.

20. Reflecting on Krishna's Devotional Characteristics


We can deepen our love and devotion to Krishna through contemplating His divine attributes such as His benevolence, wisdom, love, austerity, opulence, and beauty.

Srila Prabhupada helped many devotees to develop a strong bond with Lord Krishna through different meditation practices. The most important activity suggested by Srila Prabhupada is to chant the Hare Krishna Maha mantra. It cleans our soul and brings awareness within our heart. We can evolve spiritually and change our state of mind by making our practices a part of our everyday lives. Millions of us have gotten closer to Krishna through Bhakti yoga and the teachings of Srila Prabhupada.
